Pre-Qualifications

Minimum Age

  • At least 21 years of age

Minimum Experience (tractor Trailer/OTR)

Experienced

  • Minimum of 3 months experience in the last 36 months. The 3 months experience must be with no
    more than two carriers, and driver can have no preventable CMV accidents during the 3 months

 

*** Same guidelines above apply for drivers with local experience going into a local position

*** Alternative work experience requirements may be imposed for specific Dedicated account positions 

 

Experienced - Variant

  • 1 yr experience in the last 3 years - Can have up to 5 jobs in the last 3 years

  • 2 years experience - Can have up to 7 jobs in the last 3 years

Drivers with the following alternative experience will be required to pass an extended road test:

  • 6-12 months OTR experience in the last 3 years with carriers less than 50 trucks/drivers. 3carriers maximum

  • 12 months safe OTR experience in the last 5 years. 4 carriers maximum.

  • 24 months safe OTR experience in the last 10 years. 6 carriers maximum.

  • 6 months local experience in the last 12 months

  • 12 months local experience in the last 36 month

 

Lease Purchase/Owner Operator

  • Leases MUST have one year OTR T/T experience – and still meet USX hiring guidelines

  • Independent Contractors need 1 year of OTR T/T experience in the past 2 years

  • The NEW US Xpress LP Program only requires the Driver have 6 months T/T experience and must meet USX hiring guidelines

 

 * Truck driving school doesn’t count as experience. A driver has to have a full 3 months with one carrier to qualify as a first seat driver. If they don’t have a full three months they qualify as a 175hr student if they have completed an 120 hr course with 40 BTW hours.

* Experience must be T/T. Trailers must be greater than 40 feet.

Moving Violations (max in 3 year period)

  • No more than 3 in the last 3 years

  • No more than 2 in the last 12 months

Policy on License suspensions

  • In the last year, a Drivers license cannot be suspended for more than 6 months

  • Driver must hold a valid license for at least 18 months before they qualify after a suspension

* This includes all license suspensions.

Accidents

  • Minor Preventable CMV Accident – Private Yard or Parking Lot - No more than 6 in last 3 years

  • Minor Preventable CMV Accident – Roadway - No more than 4 in last 3 years

  • DOT Preventable Accident: No more than 2 in last 3 years

  • U-Turn Accident In A CMV: Requires 24 months of safe Driving

  • DOT-Recordable Accident (Preventable): No more than 1 in last 12 months

  • Preventable or At-Fault with fatality (CMV or POV): 5 years with safe driving record

Ticket / Accident / Incident Combo

  • No more than 4 in the past 36 months

Maximum Major Moving Violation (in the last 3 years)

  • No Careless or Reckless driving in the last 12 months while holding a Class A CDL (POV or CMV)

  • No Careless or Reckless driving in the last 6 months while holding a regular license

  • No 15 MPH over in the last 12 months while holding a Class A CDL (POV or CMV)

  • No 15 MPH over in the last 6 months while holding a regular license

  • No Failure to obey has to be 12 months old while holding a Class A CDL (POV or CMV)

  • No Failure to obey has to be 6 months while holding a regular license

  • Leaving the scene of an accident must be outside of 2 years as long as the Driver did not hold a Class A CDL. 

  • Improper or erratic lane change outside of 12 months while holding a Class A CDL (POV or CMV)

  • Improper or erratic lane change outside of 6 months while holding a regular license

  • No following too close within the past 12 months while holding a Class A CDL (POV or CMV)

  • No following too close within the past 6 months while holding a regular license

Max. Number of Jobs- in the last 3 years

  • No more than 4 in the last year

  • No more than 6 in the last 2 years

  • No more than 8 in the last 3 years

Variant

  • 12-24 months experience – No more than 7 carriers past 3 years

  • 24+ months experience – No more than 9 carriers past 3 years

  • Drivers discharged for safety reasons by an employer require 6 months of subsequent safe driving in a CMV in order to be eligible for employment consideration

  • Most recent has to be 3 years old, oldest has to be 7 years old

  • Motor vehicle traffic control violation (other than parking violation) resulting in a fatality

  • RR Crossing violations in a CMV - 6 months if holding CDL, 3 months if not holding CDL

  • No Drivers under contract with another carrier

Drug Screening

* General Requirements: For any DOT drug or alcohol violations with a prior employer (including refusals), complete and successful completion of an SAP program is required & require a minimum wait period of 120 days, then they may apply

DOT Physical Requirements

  • All drivers that are coming aboard for company drivers would have to take a new physical

  • All lease purchase driver may not have to take a new physical depending on the doctors and approval of there long form

  • All drivers are given a PST (Physical Standards Test) and they are told before going in that they have to complete this. Lift, push, balance and squat - all of those things including the Physical, road test and drug screen are things completed in orientation.
